He began to teach school at the age of 16 and by age 19 he turned to the study of theology under the Rev. Dr. Samuel Martin. On Oct. 26, 1828, Benjamin was licensed to preach by the Presbytery of New Castle. In the fall of that same year he migrated with his young family to the vicinity of Mt. Pleasant, Ohio. The 300 mile trip took them 3 weeks.
He preached his first sermon in the brick Meeting House of the Associate (Seceder) Congregation at Mt. Pleasant in June of 1829. On Dec. 2, 1829, he was installed as pastor of the short creek and Bloomfield Presbyterian congregations. The Short Creek Congregation was first organized on the eastern slope of a high hill on the farm of Benjamin's uncle John Mitchell. This church later reorganized in 1834 as the First Presbyterian Chruch of MT. Pleasant. Dr. Mitchell remained until his retirement in 1876, and until his death was pastor emeritus.
In 1834, Benjamin and Anne Mitchell purchased the place that Dr. Mitchell called "Pleasant Retreat". The house on this farm looked out over the Little Short Creek Valley. the house no longer stand. As an ardent abolitionist, Benjamin Mitchell used the house as an underground railway station before the Civil War. Dr. Mitchell was well known and loved for his long ministry, and for his teaching of Latin and Greek to many of the young men in the MT. Pleasant community.
