      WALCOTT, Frederic Collin, a Senator from Connecticut; born in New York Mills, Oneida County, N.Y., February 19, 1869; attended the public schools of Utica, N.Y.; was graduated from Lawrenceville (N.J.) School in 1886, from Phillips Academy, Andover, Mass., in 1887, and from Yale University, New Haven, Conn., in 1891; moved to New York City, N.Y., in 1907 and engaged in the manufacture of cotton cloth and in banking; moved to Norfolk, Litchfield County, Conn., in 1910, but continued his business connections in New York City until 1921, when he retired from active business pursuits; during the First World War served with the United States Food Administration as assistant to Herbert Hoover; was decorated by the Government of France with the Legion of Honor and by Poland with the Officer's Cross; president of the Connecticut Board of Fisheries and Game 1923-1928 and chairman of the Connecticut Water Commission 1925-1928; delegate to the Republican [p.1964] National Conventions in 1924, 1928, and 1932; member of the State senate 1925-1929, serving as president pro tempore 1927-1929; elected as a Republican to the United States Senate and served from March 4, 1929, to January 3, 1935; unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1934; appointed commissioner of welfare of Connecticut in July 1935 and served until July 1939; trustee of the American Geological Society 1924-1948 and of Bethume Cookman College, Daytona, Fla., 1922-1948; member of the advisory committee of the Human Welfare Group of Yale University 1920-1948; Regent of the Smithsonian Institution 1941-1948; died in Stamford, Conn., on April 27, 1949; interment in Center Cemetery, Norfolk, Conn.
