From a newspaper article written by Bernice H. German, his daughter -> John Erastus Lewis and his wife Helen Hall homesteaded in Kansas. They lived in a sod house with 8 children. He broke prairie for himself and others with a team of oxen. He made family records 24 by 40 inches, engraved by hand, fancy around the edges with doves, flowers, and fancy curlycues, selling these to other people for $1 each. He used to tell how he hid from Indians in the old carcass of a buffalo. They made apple cider, and preserved apples for the winter in a ditch lined with straw. Helen would bake bread every day.
