Tree: My Genealogy
Description: My families genealogical records have her name as Fredericka Springborn with the same dates and husband. They further list that she immigrated from German in 1843 to Wheeling, West Virginia, moving to Martins Ferry, Ohio in 1856. She was a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church in Martins Ferry, Ohio. They also say that her father was Frederick Springborn.
Our records say that she had 13 children, 53 grandchildren, 73 great grandchildren. The two names I have for children are both daughters, Emilia (Amelia) Sommers (1858-1917) who married Henry Verwohlt (who was adopted into Verwohlts) and Eda Sommers who married Wm. Otte (a half-brother of Henry that ran/owned a feed store).
All my records for her and her family are copied from work my grandmother did. I lack original sources, except my great grand-father's (son of Emelia and Henry) death certificate which you can see online at «u»<http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_dcdetail.aspx?Id=5706589>«/u» showing Emelia as his mother (the informant is his sister).

Grandmother Sommer (Frederica Springborn Sommer) was 18 years old when she came to this country from Germany. Grandpap (Conrad Sommer) met her in this country. They both worked in Wheeling, West Virginia on Eoff Street when they were married.
They lived in Tiltonsville, Ohio for some time where Uncle Charlie, Uncle Conrad, and Aunt Amelia were born. They moved to Glenns Run (Martins Ferry) then Colerain Pike (Martins Ferry). Aunt Louise, Uncles Will, Fred, and Harry were born there. They then moved back to Tiltonsville when Mom (Mary Sommer Marquardt) was born, and then later moved to Clark's Hollow where Aunt Eda was born. Aunt Annie and Uncle Louis were born on Raney's farm. They moved to Glenns Run where Uncle George and Uncle Henry were born.
They bought the farm on Glenns Run 76 years ago (1874). There was a flour mill, saw mill, sand stone quarry, lime stone quarry, and coal mine on this farm. They also grew vegetables and had a dairy business there. Grandpap (Conrad Sommer) died in 1891. Grandma (Frederica Springborn Sommer) raised 13 of her own children. Grandmother (Frederica) took in Jim and Walter Sommer and raised them, and later she also took in Gerhardt, Harry, and Clarence, who lived with her for several years.
Grandmother (Frederica) moved to Martins Ferry and built the house on Washington Street where Thelma (Thelma Sommer Gasaway) now lives (between the Burkle house and Aunt Mayme's house on the corner). Henry and George Sommer were the only ones at home at the time. They sold milk and later went into the express business. After they married, she built the house I live in now . She lived there about 24 years. Grandmother (Frederica) died in March 1928.

Source: The village of Glienke is listed in Ernest Thode's "Origins of Wheeling Germans" (extracted from Wheeling German church records, where Conrad Sommer and Fredericka Springborn were married).
