  • Notes
    • The obituary notice in the Pennsylvania Gazette in 1767 states that Emanuel Grubb was born in a cave in 1682 along the Delaware River, that he experienced little sickness in life and that "his strength and activity were surprising to a man of his age; he could mount and ride a horse with as much dexterity as a lad of twenty. A few months ago, he rode from his own house to this (Brandywine Hundred) city and back again in one day, which is upward of 40 miles. His memory was equally surprising and not in the least impaired till his death; he could remember transactions of a late date equally well with those which happened in his younger days. He was exceedingly temperate in his living, seldom making use of spiritous liquors; and for his friendly disposition was highly esteemed by all that knew him." So was written about Emanuel. Emanuel Grubb was born July 19, 1682, to John and Frances Grubb presumably in a cave along the Delaware River near Grubb's Landing, Brandywine Hundred (near Wilmington), New Castle Co., Delaware, one year after his parents marriage. He would be thirty-five years old before he married seventeen year old Ann Hedge Cock of Swedish descent. Some genealogists have combined the name to Hedgecock. Her Swedish father's name was Peter Cock (Koch in Swedish]. The reason for the middle name or addition of it is not clear. During life, Emanuel acquired considerable land about Brandywine Hundred beside that given him by his father. Both before and after his death, land was conveyed to his children as noted in his Will: son Thomas, 5 shillings beside what he hath already; son Benjamin (direct ancestor) 5 shillings beside what he hath already; daughter Edith Thatcher, 20 lbs. beside what she hath already; daughter Ann Black, 30 lbs. beside what she hath already; son Emanual, the residue of the real and personal estate and must maintain his mother Ann Grubb during her life. Emanuel was an active member of the Episcopal Church and from 1725 until his death in 1767 was a vestryman of St. Martin Church at Marcus Hook, Pa., which lies just across the Delaware border. Son Emanuel, Jr., and Grandson James also served as vestrymen. Emanuel died one month from his 85th birthday and was buried in the churchyard of St. Martin. Ann would die five years later at age 81.
