Aug. 21, 1789, d. in Wilmington, Delaware, Jan. 25, 1871; a most prominent and unselfish Abolitionist, his house being one of the stations of the underground railroad, and it is said nearly three thousand slaves passed through his hands to freedom. lie was prosecuted, 1848, for assisting slaves to escape their masters, and was so heavily fined as to sweep away his worldly possessions. He was assisted by friends to again establish himself in the iron and coal business, in which he was quite successful, and continued his activity in behalf of the runaway slaves. M.
