Notes - William M. Grannell enlisted in the US Army for WW2 on May 29, 1942 at San Francisco, CA. He listed his residence as Alameda County, CA. Private Grannell was given the serial number 39841852. He was single, with three years of college. His pre-War occupation was listed as "Lab technicians and assistants".
He seems to have been a regular soldier in Battery 'D' of the 455th AAA Bn. at Camp Stewart, Ga. Then, before the unit left Stewart for Ft. Benning, Ga., Grannell seems to have become an officer, probably due to his college experience. At Ft. Benning, Ga., he was shown as the Asst. Platoon Commander of 2nd Platoon of 'C' Btry.
When the unit went to England in Sept. 1943, 2nd Lt. William Grannell appears with Battery 'C' of the 455th AAA Bn. at Watton, Norfolk, England. His name does not appear again after the unit left England for Normandy, France in July 1944, or afterwards in France, Germany and Austria. So it appears he had left the unit for unknown reasons.
455th AAA HQ records show that he lived at "Box 152, Morro Bay, CA". during the War.
Census records show that he was living at "PO Box 633, Morro Bay, CA". in later life.
